The best app for couples depends on what you're looking for. If you want to get to know each other better, question apps like Paired are a good fit. For shared plans, calendar apps like TimeTree or Cupla are strong. Widget apps like Couple Joy or Widgetable bring small gestures to your home screen. And if you want groceries, calendar, trips and memories bundled in one ad-free app, Amorcito is the right choice.

"Couples app" is a broad term. Behind it are very different ideas about what a relationship needs. So you don't end up installing five apps and using none of them, we compared seven popular apps using the same criteria. All details come from the official listings in the App Store and on Google Play.

What matters in an app for couples

Before we get to individual apps, it's worth taking a quick look at your daily life. Ask yourselves:

  • What should the app solve? More to talk about, less scheduling chaos or just small tokens of love in between?
  • Do you use the same platform? If one of you has an iPhone and the other an Android phone, the app has to run on both.
  • How important is privacy to you? Especially in an app where you store your life together, it pays to check for ads and data protection.
  • What's your budget? Almost every app is free to try, but the scope of the free version and the subscription prices vary widely.

The apps at a glance

Paired: questions, quizzes and conversation starters

Paired focuses on daily questions, quizzes and short exercises, some with content from experts. The app is available in German and works well for couples who want to set aside time specifically for conversations. Organizational features like a calendar or lists aren't its focus. According to the App Store, Premium costs €14.99 a month, and an annual plan costs between €29.99 and €74.99 depending on the offer.

TimeTree: the calendar classic

TimeTree is a shared calendar used by couples, families and groups. There are apps for iPhone, Apple Watch and Android, plus a web version. Besides events, it offers notes and photo albums. According to the store listings, the free version shows ads; Premium is ad-free and starts at €2.99.

Cupla: couples calendar with calendar sync

Cupla is a calendar made specifically for couples that connects to Apple, Google and Outlook calendars. It also has shared to-dos and wish lists. According to its description, you can share groceries and travel plans too, but there's no dedicated trip module. Subscriptions range from €3.99 to €8.99 a month, depending on the tier.

Couple Joy: widgets, moods and questions

Couple Joy brings widgets, moods, daily questions and small games to your phone, and it relies on "streaks" you're not supposed to break. The store description is in German, but according to the App Store the app itself is only available in English. Premium starts at €14.99.

Widgetable: widgets for couples and friends

Widgetable is all about interactive widgets, like the distance between you, a "miss you" or virtual pets. It's very popular and available in German. According to the store listings, the free version contains ads; Premium starts at €1.99 a month or €22.99 a year.

Between: a private chat for two

Between is one of the oldest couples apps and is built around a private chat with shared photos and a joint calendar. Important for readers in Germany: Between is currently not available in the German App Store, though it is on Google Play. German isn't listed as an app language in the App Store.

Amorcito: your life together in one app

Amorcito is our own app, so we'll say it openly: we're not neutral here. Amorcito combines grocery lists with stores and auto-sorting, a bucket list, shared goals, a calendar with shifts and anniversaries, a trip planner, a memory map, a scrapbook, six widgets and an encrypted emergency vault. The app is available natively for iPhone, Apple Watch and Android, shows no ads and also works offline. You can use it for free on one device; to sync between your two phones, you need the Amorcito Sync subscription for €1.99 a month.

Which app is right for you?

  • You want to talk more: Paired gives you something new to talk about every day.
  • You mainly need a calendar: TimeTree if family or friends plan along too, Cupla if you want to connect your existing calendars.
  • You want small gestures on your home screen: Widgetable or Couple Joy. Amorcito has widgets too, for example with the "Thinking of you" heart and the love note.
  • You want to organize your everyday life together: Amorcito brings groceries, calendar, trips and memories together in one app, ad-free and for mixed iPhone-Android couples.

Many couples also combine two apps, for example a question app for the evenings and an organization app for everyday life. The only thing that matters is that you both actually use them.
